The Origin of the Shia Sunni Conflict

The origins of the Sunni-Shia conflict was always violent, and that appears to be giving way to another period of spreading conflict in the Middle East..

That struggle is most violent and dangerous now in Iraq, but could spread to many Arab nations in the Middle East and to Iran, which is Persian.

Shiites constitute 80 percent of the native population of the oil-rich Persian Gulf region.

Shia predominate where there is oil in Iran, in Iraq and in the oil-rich areas of eastern Saudi Arabia as well.

The Partisans of Ali

The original split between Sunnis and Shia occurred soon after the death of Muhammad, in the year 632.

"There was a dispute in the community of Muslims in present-day Saudi Arabia over the question of succession," says Augustus Norton, author of Hezbollah: A Short History. "That is to say, who is the rightful successor to Muhammad?"

Most of Muhammad's followers wanted the community of Muslims to determine who would succeed him. A smaller group thought that someone from his family should take up his mantle. They favored Ali, who was married to Muhammad's daughter, Fatimah.

The Sunnis prevailed and chose a successor to be the first caliph.

Eventually, Ali was chosen as the fourth caliph, but not before violent conflict broke out. Two of the earliest caliphs were murdered. War erupted when Ali became caliph, and he too was killed in fighting in the year 661 near the town of Kufa, now in present-day Iraq.

The violence and war split the small community of Muslims into two branches that would never reunite.

An Historic Battle

The war continued with Ali's son, Hussein, leading the Shia. "Hussein rejected the rule of the caliph at the time," says Vali Nasr, author of The Shia Revival. "He stood up to the caliph's very large army on the battlefield. He and 72 members of his family and companions fought against a very large Arab army of the caliph. They were all massacred."

One of the fundamental differences between Sunni and Shia Muslims concerns Ashura. On the tenth day of Muharram, in 680 C.E. Hussein was decapitated and his head was carried in tribute to the Sunni caliph in Damascus. His body was left on the battlefield at Karbala. Later it was buried there.

The Shia called their leaders imam, Ali being the first, Hussein the third. They commemorate Hussein's death every year in a public ritual of self-flagellation and mourning known as Ashura.

It is the symbolism of Hussein's death that holds so much spiritual power for Shia.

"An innocent spiritual figure is in many ways martyred by a far more powerful, unjust force," Nasr says. "He becomes the crystallizing force around which a faith takes form and takes inspiration."

Some of the Sunnis believe that some of the Shia are actually attributing almost divine qualities to the imams, and this is a great sin because it is associating human beings with the divinity.

Political Power Fuels Religious Split

"Why has there been such a long and protracted disagreement and tension between these two sects?" asks Ray Takeyh, author of Hidden Iran: Paradox and Power in the Islamic Republic. "It has to do with political power."

Lying in Islam

Islam mandates deception [taqiyya] when Muslims deal with non-Muslims. Muslims are allowed to lie to unbelievers if the lie is for the protection of Islam or the furthering of Islamic goals and objectives. In the cause of Islamic expansionism Muslims falsely inform non-Muslims that: Islam is a "religion of peace", the Quran mandates pluralism of religions, "jihad" is only about an "inner spiritual struggle", unprovoked violence against non-Muslims is un-Islamic, immigrant Muslims wish to fully integrate into Western countries by adopting democratic principles instead of Sharia Law, Muhammad was a man of peace, etc. None of these things are true. Taqiyya is not about truth.

There are two forms of lying to non-believers that are permitted under certain circumstances, taqiyya and kitman.


Taqiyya - Saying something that isn't true.

Kitman - Lying by omission. An example would be when Muslim apologists quote only a fragment of verse 5:32 (that if anyone kills "it shall be as if he had killed all mankind") while neglecting to mention that the rest of the verse (and the next) mandate murder in undefined cases of "corruption" and "mischief."

Though not called Taqiyya by name, Muhammad clearly used deception when he signed a 10-year treaty with the Meccans that allowed him access to their city while he secretly prepared his own forces for a takeover. The unsuspecting residents were conquered in easy fashion after he broke the treaty two years later, and some of the people in the city who had trusted him at his word were executed.

Another example of lying is when Muhammad used deception to trick his personal enemies into letting down their guard and exposing themselves to slaughter by pretending to seek peace. This happened in the case of Ka'b bin al-Ashraf (as previously noted) and again later against Usayr ibn Zarim, a surviving leader of the Banu Nadir tribe, which had been evicted from their home in Medina by the Muslims.

At the time, Usayr ibn Zarim was attempting to gather an armed force against the Muslims from among a tribe allied with the Quraish (against which Muhammad had already declared war). Muhammad's "emissaries" went to ibn Zarim and persuaded him to leave his safe haven on the pretext of meeting with the prophet of Islam in Medina to discuss peace. Once vulnerable, the leader and his thirty companions were massacred by the Muslims with ease, belying the probability that they were mostly unarmed, having been given a guarantee of safe passage (Ibn Ishaq 981).

Such was the reputation of Muslims for lying and then killing that even those who "accepted Islam" did not feel entirely safe. The fate of the Jadhima is tragic evidence for this. When Muslim "missionaries" approached their tribe one of the members insisted that they would be slaughtered even though they had already "converted" to Islam to avoid just such a demise. However, the others were convinced that they could trust the Muslim leader's promise that they would not be harmed if they simply offered no resistance. (After convincing the skeptic to lay down his arms, the unarmed men of the tribe were quickly tied up and beheaded - Ibn Ishaq 834 & 837).

Today's Muslims often try to justify Muhammad's murder of poets and others who criticized him at Medina by saying that they broke a treaty by their actions. Yet, these same apologists place little value on treaties broken by Muslims. From Muhammad to Saddam Hussein, promises made to non-Muslim are distinctly non-binding in the Muslim mindset.

Leaders in the Arab world routinely say one thing to English-speaking audiences and then something entirely different to their own people in Arabic. Yassir Arafat was famous for telling Western newspapers about his desire for peace with Israel, then turning right around and whipping Palestinians into a hateful and violent frenzy against Jews.

The 9/11 hijackers practiced deception by going into bars and drinking alcohol, thus throwing off potential suspicion that they were fundamentalists plotting jihad. This effort worked so well, in fact, that even weeks after 9/11, John Walsh, the host of a popular American television show, said that their bar trips were evidence of 'hypocrisy.'

The near absence of Qur'anic verse and reliable Hadith that encourage truthfulness is somewhat surprising, given that many Muslims are convinced that their religion teaches honesty. In fact, it is because of this ingrained belief that many Muslims are quite honest. When lying is addressed in the Qur'an, it is nearly always in reference to the "lies against Allah" - referring to the Jews and Christians who rejected Muhammad's claim to being a prophet.

Finally, the circumstances by which Muhammad allowed a believer to lie to a non-spouse are limited to those that either advance the cause of Islam or enable a Muslim to avoid harm to his well-being (and presumably that of other Muslims as well). Although this should be kept very much in mind when dealing with matters of global security, such as Iran's nuclear intentions, it is not grounds for assuming that the Muslim one might personally encounter on the street or in the workplace is any less honest than anyone else.

The Sources of the Qur'an

Muslim believes with all of his heart that the rituals and doctrines of Islam are entirely heavenly in origin and thus cannot have any earthly sources.

Middle East scholars have demonstrated beyond all doubt that every ritual and belief in Islam can be traced back to pre-Islamic Arabian culture. In other words Muhammad did not preach anything new. Everything he taught had been believed and practiced in Arabia long before he was ever born.


Jewish Sources of the Qur'an

Many of the stories in the Quran come from the Jewish Talmud, the Midrash, and many apocryphal works that already been written in 200 CE.

This was pointed out by Abraham Geiger in 1833, and further documented by another Jewish scholar, Dr. Abraham Katsh, of New York University, in 1954 (The Concise Dictionary of Islam, p. 229; Jomier, The Bible and the Quran -- Henry Regency Co., Chicago, 1959, 59ff; Sell, Studies, pp. 163ff.; Guillaume, Islam, p. 13).

1. The source of Sura 3:35-37 is the fanciful book called The Protevangelion's James the Lesser.

2. The source of Sura 87:19 is the Testament of Abraham.

3. The source of Sura 27:17-44 is the Second Targum of Esther.

4. The fantastic tale that God made a man "die for a hundred years" with no ill effects on his food, drink, or donkey was a Jewish fable (Sura 2:259ff.).

5. The idea that Moses was resurrected and other material came from the Jewish Talmud (Sura 2:55, 56, 67).

6. The story in Sura 5:30,31 can also be found in pre-Islamic works from Pirke Rabbi Eleazer, the Targum of Jonathan ben Uzziah and the Targum of Jerusalem.

7. The tale of Abraham being delivered from Nimrod's fire came from the Midrash Rabbah (see Suras 21:51-71; 29:16, 17; 37:97,98).

It must be also pointed out that Nimrod and Abraham did not live at the same time. Muhammad was always mixing people together in the Quran who did not live at the same time.

8. The non-biblical details of the visit of the Queen of Sheba (Saba) in Sura 27:20-44 came from the Second Targum of the Book of Esther.

9. The source of Sura 2:102 is no doubt the Midrash Yalkut (chapter 44).

10. The story found in Sura 7:171 of God lifting up Mount Sinai and holding it over the heads of the Jews as a threat to squash them if they rejected the law came from the Jewish book Abodah Sarah.

11. The story of the making of the golden calf in the wilderness, in which the image jumped out of the fire fully formed and actually mooed (Suras 7:148; 20:88), came from Pirke Rabbi Eleazer.

12, The seven heavens and hells described in the Quran came from the Zohar and the Hagigah.

13. Muhammad utilized the Testament of Abraham to teach that a scale or balance will be used on the day of judgment to weigh good and bad deeds in order to determine whether one goes to heaven or hell (Suras 42:17; 101:6-9).

Sabean Sources of the Qur'an

Muhammad incorporated parts of the religion of the Sabeans of Arabia into Islam (Encyclopedia off Islam (ed. Eliade), pp. 303ff.; International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, pp. 1:219ff.).

He adopted such pagan rituals as:

1. Worshiping at Kabah
2. Praying five times a day towards Mecca (Muhammad chose five of the same times the Sabeans prayed).
3. Fasting for part of a day for an entire month.
4. The Crescent Moon Symbol- The symbol of the worship of the moon god in Arabian culture and elsewhere throughout the Middle East was the crescent moon.
5. Allah - The Quraysh tribe into which Muhammad was born was particularly devoted to Allah, the moon god, and especially to Allah's three daughters who were viewed as intercessors between the people and Allah.
6. Astral Religions - In Arabia, the sun god was viewed as a female goddess and the moon as the male god. As has been pointed out by many scholars such as Alfred Guilluame, the moon god was called by various names, one of which was Allah! (Islam, p. 7).

Allah, the moon god, was married to the sun goddess. Together they produced three goddesses who were called "the daughters of Allah." These three goddesses were called Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Manat.

Eastern Religious Sources

Muhammad derived some of his ideas from Eastern religions such as Zoroastrianism and Hinduism. All of these things were in existence long before Muhammad was born.

Eastern and Asian Religions as Buddhism, Hinduiam, Yezdis, and Zoroastrianism.

The Quran records the following things which are ascribed to Muhammad but in reality were previously known stories now attributed to him for the first time (Sell, Studies, pp. 219ff.).

1. The story of a flying trip through seven heavens.
2. The Houries of paradise.
3. Azazil and other spirits coming up from Hades.
4. The "light" of Muhammad.
5. The bridge of Sirat.
6. Paradise with its wine, women, and song (from the Persians).
7. The king of death.
8. The peacock story.

When Allah Does Not Know...

God or Allah has to be the only one for all human beings, no discrimination is applicable here. But, after reading Holy Koran I find super powerful Allah
does not know lots of things what we need today or what is our history, that's why there are still some FAQ left.

Based on the information from Holy Koran, I do not find the answers of my questions after reading Koran.

Let me write just a few general phenomenons which Allah should know and inform us because He is almighty.

1)
Sura 2:22, 13.3, 15.19, 20:53, 22:65, "Who has made earth for you like a bed..." or "Who has made earth for you (like a carpet) spread out..." (Sura - 43:10)
Earth Is Spherical (Round): There is no doubt to almost everybody that we could know the earth is round in favour of the laws of science; however,
almighty Allah's vision proves the Earth is flat, "like a bed".

The Bible say: "It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth"(Isaiah 40:22).

Allah is all-powerful and He created us and the Universe, therefore, why doesn't he know the earth is spherical?

Can anyone produce in debate any verses from Holy Koran where He explained the acceptable information on earth?

Sura 7:54, 10:3, 11:7 clearly state that God created "the heavens and the earth" in six days.
But in Sura 41:9-12 the detailed description of the creation procedure adds up to eight days.

Why wasn't powerful Allah able to create the Earth and Heaven at a precise day? And why does He make mistakes to state the correct days in Holy Koran?

3)
Movement of the Earth: The Earth is always moving.
It revolves around the Sun every 365 days at a speed of about 30 km/sec.
Moreover, the Earth also has an axis, and it rotates on its axis every 24 hours at a speed of about 1670 km/hr.

But, almighty Allah is not familiar with it. On top of it (Sura - 27:61, 40:64) He explained some wrong phenomenon in Holy Koran that Earth is motionless.

4)
The Universe: According to Koran, Allah stays above the Sky which is far away from Earth.

It is so miraculous that He did not post any messages to His messenger about the Solar System which contains the Earth, Sun, Jupiter, Mars, Pluto,
and so on.

This question shows up because supreme Allah just mentions about the Sky, Sun, Earth, Moon, Stars, etc which can be seen with open eyes from the deserts,
and He points out some related verses only about those.

5)
Sura 21:51-71; 37:97-98, says that Abraham was thrown into a fire [by Nimrod]. Nimrod and Abraham did not live at the same time.

6)
Sura 37:100-112, says Abraham went to sacrifice Ishmael. The Bible says it was Issac.

7)
Sura 5:73-75,116, the Christian Trinity is 3 gods: the Father, the Mother (Mary), and the Son (Jesus).

8)
Creation of Human Beings: Almighty Allah is still playing game with His followers. He mentioned that we are created from clot of congealed blood (Sura 96:2, 75:38).
the Bible says man was created from the dust of the ground.

This theory of the "clot of blood" was directly stolen from the ancient Greek Doctor Galen's hypothesis.

Is it possible to believe in this powerful God who steals the theory from someone?

Does almighty Allah really know how we are created?

9)
The Trees'/Plants' Lives: It is ridiculous that almighty Allah did/does not know the trees/plants have lives. Muslims are not allowed to place even an
image which has life like people and animals. This is why Muslims are permitted to put only the portraits of flowers and plants in the Masques and homes.

10)
Sura 18:89-98 says Alexander the Great was a Muslim and worshiped Allah and lived to an old age. Actually, Alexander the Great died very young and was by
no means a Muslim. The Greek, Alexander the Great lived from 356 - 323 B.C. He was 33 years old when he died.

Muhammad and Islam did not come along till 610 A.D. This was over 900 years after Alexander the Great died.

I asked these above prudent facts to some highly educated Muslims, they were so angry at me first; however, when they were not able to figure those out,
they said to me "the problems which are not given in Koran, the Hadiths solved them".

Hmmm... Well, that's fine; but "the problems in which almighty Allah was not able or failed to fix them, how can the Hadiths do? These Hadiths even were
NOT written by Prophet Mohamed.

Contrast these blunders and many others in the Qur'an, showing this book is NOT INSPIRED by God.

Muhammad had obviously heard some Bible stories, but he seems to have got them confused and mixed up when it came out in his prophetic utterances.
It is quite apparent that the Qu'ran is simply the product of hearsay and imperfect editing from a plurality of traditions then known to Muhammad.

Could anyone please show me the correct way for those above claims from the Hadiths besides Holy Koran?

If any infidel or non-Muslim wants to accept Islam in the 21st century, they would definitely want to know at least those facts.

Punishment of thief:

Cutting off Hands and Feet is a cruel insane Islamic punishment giving to people who steal. This punishment was ordered by the "mercyful" Allah and practiced by the "Holy Prophet".

Koran 5:38-
"As to the theif, male or female, cut off his or her hands: A punishment by way of example, from Allah, for their crime: and Allah is exalted in power." In this verse Allah stresses that with his glory, the punishment of cutting hands is legalized. The punishment is not intended to accuse or incriminate.

Stoning to Death

a 13-year-old Somali girl was buried up to her waist, with her hands tied, and stoned to death by a crowd of Muslim men while she cried and begged them to stop. Her parents were forced to watch. She had committed the Islamic crime of adultery.

Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow had been gang raped by three men. After reporting the attack to the authorities, the Islamist militia in charge of Kismaayo, Aisha was then convicted of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning.

In the punishment of stoning to death, the stones should not be too large so that the person dies on being hit by one or two of them. They should not be too small either, that they could not be defined as stones.

In this verse Allah stresses that with his glory, the punishment of cutting hands is legalized. The punishment is not intended to accuse or incriminate.

Convert to Islam or Die:

"On the night of 18 June 1983 the Islamic revolutionary authorities in ShÌr·z hanged ten Bah·'Ì women and teenage girls who had refused to recant their Faith and convert to Isl·m. Three days earlier the same authorities had hanged six men, including the husbands, fathers, and sons of four of the women."

As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and I'll conduct admonish them, refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them: but if they to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance): for Allah is most high, great.

Honor Killing:

An honor killing (customary killing) is the murder of a family or clan member by one or more fellow family members, where the murderers believe the victim to have brought dishonor and shame upon the family, clan, or community. Her male relatives are bound by duty and culture to murder her.

The Solution of Islamic Terrorism

One important thing to note beforehand is that Muslims detest pork because they believe pigs are filthy animals. Some of them simply refuse to eat it, while others won't even touch pigs at all, nor any of their by-products. To them, eating or touching a pig, its meat, its blood, etc., is to be instantly barred from paradise (and those 72 virgins) and doomed to hell.

Just before World War I, there were a number of terrorist attacks on the United States forces in the Philippines by; you guessed it, Muslim extremists. So General Pershing captured 50 terrorists and had them tied to posts execution style. He then had his men bring in two pigs and slaughter them in front of the now horrified terrorists.

The soldiers then soaked their bullets in the pigs blood, and proceeded to execute 49 of the terrorists by firing squad. The soldiers then dug a big hole, dumped in the terrorist's bodies and covered them in pig blood, entrails, etc. They let the 50th terrorist go. And for the next forty-two years, there was not a single Muslim extremist attack anywhere in the world.

I think this is a great idea......... plus it helps pork prices........

Israel's Security Fence - "The Wall of Shame"

Terrorism has been defined throughout the international community as a crime against humanity. As such, the state of Israel not only has the right but also the obligation to do everything in its power to lessen the impact and scope of terrorism on the citizens of Israel.

The security fence in an operational concept conceived by the Israeli Defense Establishment in order to reduce the numbers of terrorist attacks whether in the form of explosive-rigged vehicles or in the form of suicide bombers who enter into Israel with the intention of murdering innocent babies, children, women and men.

Hypocrisy:
Morocco -- Sahara:
The great wall of Morocco known as “the security belt” is a defensive wall of 2720 kms (1690 mi) long. It serves to protect Morocco from hostile intentions of Polisario.

Pakistan -- Afghanistan:
Pakistan built a 2400 kms (1490 mi)barrier to separate itself from Afghanistan.

India -- Pakistan:
As well India built its 3300 kms (2050 mi) wall to separate itself from neighboring Pakistan.

South Korea -- North Korea:
South Korea protects itself from North Korea with a barrier of 250 kms (154 mi).

Saudi Arabia -- Yemen:
Saudi Arabia built 1770 kms (1100 mi) concrete wall with sophisticated electronic monitoring devices. The wall is intended to prevent Yemenite infiltration into the country. The barrier costs over 700 million dollars. Little matters the anger of local Yemenite tribes denouncing the reduction of Yemenite territory by 7 kms (4 mi).

As well Saudi Arabia erects a 900 kms (500 mi) ultra modern barrier on its border with Iraq.

Turkey (Cyprus):
Turkey claims part of the island of Cyprus and delimits that territory by a barrier of 300 kms. (187 mi)

Thailand -- Malaysia:
Since 2007, Thailand erected a 75 kms (46 mi) barrier along its most accessible border with Malaysia. According to Bangkok, its purpose is to prevent southern troubled provinces Muslim terrorists from entering the northern part of the country.

Uzbekistan -- Tajikistan:
Uzbekistan erected a closure of 1283 kms (797 mi) along its border with Tajikistan.

United Arab Emirates -- Oman:
United Arab Emirates are in the process of building 410 kms (255 mi) barrier on their border with Oman.

Kuwait -- Iraq:
Kuwait reinforces the exiting 215 kms (134 mi) structure along its border with Iraq.

United States -- Mexico:
What about United States?
What about Obama and his speech in Cairo?
What about this land of liberty and the Mexican border?
The 3360 kms (2087 mi) length wall between United states and Mexico is being erected to protect the U.S from Mexicans who try to enter illegally the country in order to escape poverty and misery.

And what about Europe?
Always so ready to condemn certain others?

Spain - Ceuta and Melilla
Spain of Javier Solana and Moratinos erected an electrified barrier of 11 kms (7 mi) guarded continuously by soldiers at Melilla, as well at its border with Ceuta, The fence’s long 11 (7 mi) kms and consists of parallel 3-metre (10-foot) fences topped with barbed wire, with regular watchposts and a road running between them to accommodate police patrols or ambulance service in case of need. Underground cables connect spotlights, noise and movement sensors, and video cameras to a central control booth; dozens of Guard ships and patrol boats check the coast, while 621 Guardia Civil’s officers and 548 police officers control the shore.

It serve to protect Spain from illegal Moroccan and sub Saharan workers who try to enter its territory to escape famine.

Ireland (Belfast)
There are also the famous “walls of Ireland”, length of 0.5 kms (0.310 mi), where for over thirty years, Catholic and Protestants desire to be separated from each other. For this, roads have been cut in order to end the throwing of stones, Molotov cocktails, hand grenades and various other projectiles. Entire areas of Belfast have been disfigured, homes destroyed and residents ex-pulsed in total general international indifference.

BUT THE ONLY WALL CALLED “THE WALL OF SHAME” IS THE ONE BUILT BY THE STATE OF ISRAEL!!!

For Israel however the benefit of such wall is without question:
Between 2002 and 2008, the number of victims of suicide bomb attacks on its soil has fallen from 451 to 7. This fall of 98.5% (!!!) does not of course apply at Eilat, nor Dimona, nor along the Judean desert as these areas are not yet enclosed in the security barrier.

It is more legitimate to build a wall in order to protect oneself from immigrants living in poverty and misery than to do it in order to prevent the entering of TERRORIST, SUICIDE BOMBERS?

I let you, Mr. Obama, Mr. Solana, Mr. Moratinos and all your colleagues answer this question.

The Ancient Allah

Historical evidences, impartial logic, well versed references and all available circumstantial judgments can very well prove that—(a) Allah name of deity was pre-existed much before the arrival of Islam, (b) Pre-Islamic Pagan peoples worshipped Allah as their supreme deity (moon-god). Allah’s name existed in pre-Islamic Arab. In ancient Arab the Allah was considered to be the supreme God/deity (as Moon-God) and Arab Pagans worshipped Allah before Islam arrived.

Let us examine below some valid questions and answers :

Did the Pagan Arabs in pre-Islamic times worship 360 gods? Yes

Did the pagans Arabs worship the sun, moon and the stars? Yes

Did the Arabs built temples to the Moon-god? Yes

Did different Arab tribes give the Moon-god different names/titles? Yes

What were some of the names/titles? Sin, Hubul, Ilumquh, Al-ilah.

Was the title “al-ilah” (the god) used as the Moon-god? Yes

Was the word “Allah” derived from “al-ilah?” Yes

Was the pagan “Allah” a high god in a pantheon of deities? Yes.

Was he worshipped at the Kabah? Yes.

Was Allah only one of many Meccan gods? Yes

Did they place a statue of Hubul on top of the Kabah? Yes.

At that time was Hubul considered the Moon-god? Yes.

Was the Kabah thus the “house of the Moon-god”? Yes.

Did the name “Allah” eventually replace that of Hubul as the name of the Moon god? Yes.

Did they call the Kabah the “house of Allah”? Yes.

Were al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat called “the daughters of Allah”? Yes.

Yusuf Ali explains in fn. 5096, pg. 1445, that Lat, Uzza and Manat were known as “the daughters of God [Allah]”

Did the Qur’an at one point tell Muslims to worship al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat? Yes. In Surah 53:19-20.

Have those verses been “abrogated” out of the present Qur’an? Yes.

What were they called? “The Satanic Verses.”

The variable names (Sin, Hubul, llumquh, Al-ilah) of moon god were used by various tribes of pagan Arabs. Pagan god SIN was the name of Moon-god.

Who is actually Allah?
According to Islamic Theologians (Mullahs, Maulana, Moulavis, etc.), or Islamic teachings-- Allah is the supreme God or creator who (suddenly one day?) talked or introduced Himself with Prophet Muhammad through an Angel named Gabriel, disclosing the truth that it is the Allah who created everything in the universe. Surprisingly, Qur’an never defines the word “Allah” as to who actually Allah was or what was the relation of Allah with pagans. I believe, 99% percent of Muslims do believe that—Allah’s name was invented or started right from the time when Gabriel disclosed the truth (?) to Prophet Muhammad in the cave of Hira Parvat (Mountain) and gave Muhammad the Quran. They believe that before this truth was revealed—pagan Arabs were in the total darkness (Andhakar Zuug) and they used to worship various puppet goddess and that the pagans were very evil people. I can bet on this fact that no mullahs ever told us the real truth, neither they believe this clean truth that “Allah” was in fact a pre-existing deity in pagan Arabia. What a hypocrisy?

Some important factors which will suggest that the name“Allah” was already in use by Pagans as their chief God/deity:

(A) In pre-Islamic days, that Muslims call the Days of ignorance, the religious background of the Arabs was pagan, and basically animistic. Through Moon, Sun, Stars, Planets, Animals, wells, trees, stones, caves, springs, and other natural objects man could make contact with the deity. At Mekka, “Allah”was the chief of the gods and the special deity of the Quraish, the prophet’s tribe. Allah had three daughters: Al Uzzah (Venus) most revered of all and pleased with human sacrifice; Manah, the goddess of destiny, and Al Lat, the goddess of vegetable life. These three daughters of Allah (there is a Quranic verse about them) were considered very powerful over all things. Therefore, their intercessions on behalf of their worshippers were of great significance. ...

(B) Arabs used to give their children names such as—Abdullah (slave of Allah). Clean proof was the fact that, Muhammad’s father’s name was “Abdullah”. Logical analogy here is—had there been no “Allah” in pre-Islamic Arab, there could be no Abdullah or slave of Allah in Arabia.

(C) Even today, in the entire Arab World, not only Muslims but all other non-Muslim (Jews, Christians, Sabians, Bahai, an atheist etc.) Arabs says—“Ya Allah” as the expression of surprise or unhappiness/sorrow.

(D). Albert Hourani’s statement: “The Islamic name used for God was “Allah”, which was already in use for one of the local Gods (it now used by Arabic-speaking Jews and Christians as the name of God (A history Of Arab people by Albert Hourani, 1991, page-16, Belknap press of Harvard University, USA)

History tells us two theories of Allah’s existence in and around the Kaba Sharif: (1) Pagans used to call the largest Statue amongst the 360 deities as ALLAH—whom they used to consider the chief/supreme deity (god). Or, (2) Pagan Arabs used to worship 360 deities inside Kaba Sharif, and they used to consider them different smaller deities under the total control of a single most powerful chief deity called “ALLAH” who was invisible (Nirakar) and was the all-powerful, all-knowing, and totally unknowable.

Amazing Similarities with Hindu Religion:
In India’s Hindu religion is quite similar to the number two theory (above) of pagan belief. Although, Hindus worship many different Goddesses—they invariably have faith upon a single supreme invisible deity called “Bhagaban” (some call it “Ischhaar”) whom they call “Nirakar”. And, surprisingly there is no sculptural image/figure for this Bhagaban. But all Hindus worship Him along with other numerous deities. This Bhagaban is considered as the lord of all other deities. What would happen—if some intelligent prophet would have asked Hindus to give up worshipping other goddesses and keeping only Bhagaban as their only deity making it a monotheist religion just like Islam? Could it not be another religion like Islam?

Now some factors which will suggest “Allah” was the Moon-god of Arab pagans:

(A) In Qura’n there are at least a dozen verses in which Allah repeatedly swears by the names such as moon, sun, stars, planets, night, wind etc. It is a mystery why the creator Allah (?) should swear by his creations. Normally, we swear by the name of something much superior to us, such as we swear by God or by the name of our father (who is considered senior or superior to us). But we never swear by the name of something inferior to us. Here in the Quran swearing fashions of Allah (God) by moon or stars hinting us that Allah considered these things superior to himself. And this makes us to think (otherwise) as to who actually acted as Allah in Quran? However, in his explanation of why the Qur’an swears by the moon in Surah 74:32, “Nay, verily by the Moon,” Yusuf Alli comments, “The moon was worshipped as a deity in times of darkness”(fn. 5798, pg. 1644). Perhaps, this swearing of Allah was due to the usual/cultural habits of worshipping moon as their God in pagan customs.

(B) Yousuf Ali stated (Page-1921-1623 of his English Translation of Holy Quran):

“Moon-worship was equally popular in various forms………Apollo and Diana—the twin brother and sister, representing the sun and moon. …in the Vedic religion of India the moon god was Soma, the lord of the planets…….moon was male divinity in ancient India. Moon was also male divinity in ancient Semitic religion, and the Arabic word for the moon “qamar’ is of the masculine gender, on the other hand, the Arabic word for sun “shams” is feminine gender. The pagan Arabs evidently looked upon the sun as a goddess and the moon as a God.

The Pagan deities best known in the Ka’ba and round about Mecca were Lat, Uzza, and Manat.…the 360 idols established by the Pagans in the Ka’ba probably represented the 360 days of an inaccurate solar year. This was the actual modern pagan worship as known to the Quraish contemporary with our prophet”

(C) Influence of Moon in Islam:
Who can deny the paramount influences of moon in Muslim’s life? In Islam, moon is considered holiest astronomical object, and moon is the guiding light of all Islamic rituals/festivals. Contradictions and conflicts are very common with the dates of Eids and Ramadan and obviously it is a chronic problem and moon is the nucleus of this problem. Crescent moon and stars are the symbolic sign in the national flags of many Muslim countries, and it is present over the Mosques, in the Muslim graveyard etc.

Prophet Muhammad compromised to Pagans to establish Islam in Arabia:

Prophet Muhammad did his clever tactics of adapting many rites of paganism into Islam, in order to accommodate Islam among the pagan Arabs. He made lots of political pacts with the Pagan Leaders such as Abu Suffian to accommodate his new idea of religion and he agreed to incorporate many of the Pagan rituals in Islam. Prophet Muhammad asked the pagans to worship only the “Allah” the largest God,

And destroy the idols of all other gods and goddesses that existed in Kabah. To establish oneness (monotheist) of God, he repeatedly asked them not to make any partners to Allah (That is why we can find hundreds of Quranic verses “asking not to make any partners to Allah). Finally, the Prophet was able to convince (by force of course) the pagans to destroy all idols, and on return (he) agreed (perhaps) to keep the “Names” of the goddess of most famous Pagan tribes as the alternative names of Allah—hence Islam has 99 NAMES of Allah.

Prophet Muhammad did command his followers to participate in these pagan ceremonies while the pagans were still in control of Mecca. (Please See Yusuf Ali, fn. 214, pg. 78). ... “the whole of the [pagan] pilgrimage was spiritualized in Islam...” (Yusuf Ali: fn. 223 pg. 80). In the Tafsir (of Quran-2:200) maoulana Yousuf Ali stated: “After Pilgrimage, in Pagan times, the pilgrims used to gather in assemblies in which the praises of ancestors were sung. As the whole of the pilgrimage rites were spiritualized in Islam, so this aftermath of the Pilgrimage was also spiritualized. It was recommended for pilgrims to stay on two or three days after the pilgrimage, but they must use them in prayer and praise to God.(#223 of Shane’nazul by Maoulana Yousuf Ali, page-81)

In Islam many rituals performed (today) by devoted Muslims in the name of Allah are connected to the pagan worship that existed before Islam. Pagans practices of the Pilgrimage of Kabah once a year--the Fast of Ramadan, running around the Kabah seven times, kissing the black stone, shaving the head, animal sacrifices, running up and down two hills, throwing stones at the devil, snorting water in and out the nose, praying several times a day toward Mecca, giving alms, Friday prayers, etc. are strictly followed by Muslims today. Nobody can deny the fact that, all the above rituals of Muslim’s hajj today—existed well before the arrival of Islam.

It is highly plausible to consider the fact that by incorporating much of the Pagan’s rituals in new religion Islam—Prophet successfully reduced the pagan-risk and it was perhaps one of the most important milestone-attempts to conquer the minds of Pagans resulting in massive breakdown of the Pagans’ moral and support to oppose Islam.

The central shrine at Mekka was the Pagan’s Kaaba (called House of Allah), a cube like stone structure which still stands though many times rebuilt. Imbedded in one corner is the black stone, probably a meteorite, the kissing of which is now an essential part of the Muslim’s pilgrimage.

It is the historical fact that the Ka’aba, the sacred shrine which contains the Black Stone, in Mecca was used for pagan idol worship before Islam and even called the House of Allah at that time. The name of the God whom the Arabs worshipped was the god of pantheon—Ali-ilah the god, the supreme, the predeterminer of everybody’s life or destiny—the chief God “Allah”

Who did not read the story of BLACK STONE which was very sacred (povitra) to all various tribes of Quraish. When one day this sacred stone was needed to transfer from one place to another, there was a quarrel amongst the various tribes, as to who will carry that sacred stone? Then most intelligent and righteous young boy Muhammad (was not a prophet then) invented the solution of this serious problem. He (Muhammad) put this sacred stone over a Chaddor (piece of cloth) and asked one representative from each tribe to hold the Chaddor and carry the stone. I narrated this story briefly just to prove that—black stone did exist long before Islam was invented.

In summary, it has been truthfully and logically proven with all possible available circumstantial evidences/rational that, Islam was not a new religion but it is a reformed paganism. I believe thatall these monotheistic religions have more or less similar origins. This idea of monotheistic religion was not a brand new invention. Monotheistic thought was declared by Ancient Pharaoh Kings, Mesopotamia’s king Hamarubi (3000 B.C.), and Alexander the Great (300 B.C.). Differences were, these kings demanded that they themselves were the God whom everybody should worship.

The Reasons to Love Palestinians

1. There is no such thing as Mothers Day. No worry about cards, gifts, and expensive meals. There is no honor in being a woman in our culture, so there is no reason to devote a day to her. We do, however, get to enjoy watching our fathers beat our mothers senseless for the slightest real or imagined infraction. Also, if Dad suspects that Mom spoke to a strange man in the street, he gets to kill her to preserve the family honor!

2. Weapons. Every child, from the time he can grasp an object, is trained to feel comfortable with a rifle or pistol in his hand. And every Palestinian has a weapon: a gun, a rocket launcher, a pound of C-4. What good are hands if they aren't used to kill?

3. Hate. Boy, we love to hate. Hate is the very basis and foundation of our culture. From the time a child is old enough to understand language, we teach him to hate. Hate Jews, hate the West, hate his fellow man, and most of all, hate himself. We have no love songs, we do not preach love, the word love does not appear anywhere in our society. Hate is the fuel that runs our motors.

4. Death. The moment a Palestinian Arab child is born, his parents begin to plan his death. How will he die? Will he be struck by an Israeli bullet while being used as a human shield by Palestinian gunmen? Will he get shot while throwing rocks at Jewish soldiers? Will he be packed with explosives and sent to blow himself up, killing others? Or will he merely be one of the many Palestinians murdered by other Palestinians in the normal course of daily life in the death-culture of the Palestinian Arabs? Who knows? That's part of the thrill.

5. Unemployment. Palestinians used to have jobs, working in Israel. But then, our leaders had a brilliant idea: suicide bombings! For their own protection, Israel had to close its borders, preventing Palestinians from going to their jobs, so they could sit around unemployed and blame the Jews for it. What great fun to be your own worst enemy!

6. Martyrdom. Who in their right mind wants to be a martyr? Among normal people, a martyr complex is considered immature and obnoxious, if not downright crazy. With us, it's the central syndrome of our society! Hey, look at me, I'm gonna kill myself and become admired! And then, when we do kill ourselves, instead of being considered pathetic, we DO get admired! It's a whole complete cycle of sickness! American kids collect baseball cards; Palestinian kids collect martyr cards (really! no joke!).

7. A feeling of entitlement. When Israel came into being, we declared war. We lost. We fought again. We lost. We fought again. We lost. Israel had the right to kill us all (we sure would kill all of them if we got the chance). Instead, they allow us to live on land they conquered. But we can't leave that alone. We have to claim entitlement to live on land that we lost in 6 wars. Since when does the loser of a war get to claim the land he fought over? They don't. But we do. Not only that, but we happily kill our kids over it! Hey, what's more important -- a chunk of dirt, or some worthless kid who isn't going to amount to anything anyway?

8. Uselessness. The Jews have won more Nobel Prizes than all other ethnic groups combined. Their contributions to science, art, literature and the humanities is far out of proportion to their population. What have Palestinians produced? Nothing! Not a thing. We don't do anything productive. We're too busy rioting and killing and chanting and screaming and calling for everyone's death. And we blame the Jews for it, as though the Jews stop us from being productive.

9. Friends. The Palestinian people sure know how to pick 'em. Saadam Hussein. The Taliban. Adolf Hitler. You name a psychopath, and we embrace him. And look who our supporters are! The American Nazi Party. The KKK. Just check their websites and see how they stand in solidarity with us. When you support the Palestinian "cause," you're in real good company. Bring your white sheet!

10. Freedom. The biggest laugh in the world is when people call us "freedom fighters" or they say we're fighting for our freedom. Take a look at all 22 Arab countries. Do you see any freedom there? Well, that's what our country will be like if we ever get one. It will be a dictatorship run by armed, masked thugs who will kill anyone who dissents. Just like we are now. Freedom???? LOLOLOLOL The word doesn't even exist in our language. Hey, just like George Orwell said: "Freedom is slavery. Long live big brother!"

Qana Massacre

"Hezbollywood" is a name popularized by a number of website pundits meant to suggest that Hezbollah and the media were artificially inflating the number of civilian deaths resulting from the attack on Lebanon by Israel in July of 2006 after a pair of Israeli soldiers were taken by militants.

The most famous Hezbollywood story was "Qana Massacre", accusing Israel for killing Lebanese children.

It was to be a perfect Hollywood ending for Hezbollah at July 31, 2006.

The setting was also perfect: Qana was again being used as a primary site for launching rockets against Israeli cities.

Just as the Israeli bombing of the village of Qana in 1996 brought a premature end to Israel's Operation "Grapes of Wrath," so too a sequel of Qana II could change, once and for all, the direction of Israelís current summer blockbuster, "Change of Direction."

The IDF reported that more than 150 rockets had been launched from Qana and its vicinity at Israeli civilians, wreaking destruction in Kiryat Shmona, Maalot, Nahariya and Haifa.

It was only a matter of time before the Israeli Air Force would come for a visit, using
pinpoint targeting of the sites used to launch rockets, Hezbollah logistical centers and weapon storage facilities.

Between midnight and one in the morning, there was a strike at or near the building that eventually collapsed. Thus there was an unexplained 7 to 8 hour gap between the time of the helicopter strike and the building collapse.

1) The roof of the building was intact. Journalist Ben Wedeman of CNN noted that there was a larger crater next to the building, but observed that the building appeared not to have collapsed as a result of the Israeli strike.

Why would the civilians who had supposedly taken shelter in the basement of the building not leave after the post-midnight attack?

They just went back to sleep and had the bad luck to wait for the building to collapse in the morning?

2) Lebanese rescue teams did not start evacuating the building until the morning and only after the camera crews came.

3) There was little blood, CNN's Wedeman noted: all the victims, he concluded, appeared to have died while as they were sleeping, apparently, through thunderous Israeli air attacks.

4) Rescue workers equipped with cameras were removing the bodies from the same opening in the collapsed structure.

5) Rescue workers filmed as they carried the victims on the stretchers, occasionally flipping up the blankets so that cameras could show the faces and bodies of the dead.

But Israelis steeled to scenes of carnage from Palestinian suicide bombings and Hezbollah rocket attack could not help but notice that these victims did not look like our victims. Their faces were ashen gray. Their limbs appeared to have stiffened, from rigor mortis.

Viewers can judge for themselves. But the accumulating evidence suggests another explanation for what happened at Qana. The scenario would be a setup in which the time between the initial Israeli bombing near the building and morning reports of its collapse would have been used to "plant" bodies killed in previous fighting ó reports in previous days indicated that nearby Tyre was used as a temporary morgue place them in the basement, and then engineer a "controlled demolition" to fake another Israeli attack.

The well-documented use by Palestinians of this kind of faked footage from the alleged shooting of Mohammed Dura in Gaza, scenes from Jenin of "dead" victims falling off gurneys and then climbing back on ó have merited the creation of a new film genre called "Palliwood."

There is increasing evidence that the Qana sequel is another episode in this genre, a variety which might be called Hezbollywood. The Hezbollah have evidently learned their craft well.

The current suspension of Israeli military air activity is supposedly intended, among other things, to be used for the investigation of what really happened at Qana. It is to be hoped that there are real journalists on the scene, and unbiased medical examiners, who will have the courage and intelligence to sort out the anomalies and contradictions, and get to the buried truth of what happened.

There is no shortage of victims in Lebanon and Israel these days. From this vantage point, at this time, it looks like in the case of Qana, the worldís media was duped in a cruel and colossal hoax by a terror organization that knows no moral bounds in its exploitation of suffering and anti-Israel hatred. But, as usual, the only party expected to pay the full price will be Israelis.

Yes, it would be a Hollywood ending for it all to end in Qana, exactly as it did a decade ago. But perfect endings, and perfect crimes, are rarely pulled off in real life.

As the author points out (like we have earlier) a strangely similar "atrocity" in Qana saved Hezbollahís neck in 1996.

There is also the matter of the time gap, since the Israelis attacked at 01:00 am and the building collapsed hours later. And the inexplicable delay of the bodies not being removed until hours after that.

But, as the author also notes, the most compelling evidence is the photos of the bodies themselves. They simply donít look like recently deceased bodies. But ones that have been dead for some time.

That's Hezbollywood.

The history of the Muslim Brotherhood is the key to understanding today's Islamic Jihad.

1902. Ibn Saud, local tribesman of Arabian Peninsula, captures Ryad and proclaims himself regional leader. In order to gain acceptance and loyalty from the local Bedouin tribes, Ibn Saud revives the practice of Wahhabi Islam and institutes strict Islamic Law over the land. Wahhabi indoctrination centers (Ikhwan, meaning brotherhoods) appear throughout Saudi Arabia.


Wahhabism is a radical form of Islam, founded by Mohammad Ibn Abdul Al-Wahhab in the 18th century, which claims that: any teachings added to Islam after the tenth century are false. It envisions an Islamic empire led by holy men, with no other law than strict puritan Islamic law. This is why they are referred to as ‘Islamic fundamentalists’. It opposes the concept of nationalism and borders as being un-Islamic.

It justifies violent means to rid the Muslim world against the non-Islamic element. Wahhabism eventually developed a very strong anti-American and anti-Western message.

It is generally rejected by the vast majority of the Muslim world.

1920. The Mutawa, Wahhabi religious police, operates rule of terror in Saudi towns. Churches, synagogues and any non-Islamic temple of worship are banned from Saudi Arabia (still effective in 2002). The Wahhabi movement grows and becomes increasingly radical.

1920. Saudi Arabia discovers its enormous oil reserve and starts to do business with the non-Islamic Western countries, America in particular. Saudi oil becomes central to fueling industrial revolution. The Saud family becomes immensely rich overnight. It continues to play the Wahhabi card for regional support.

1927. Wahhabi extremists revolt against Saudi regime because of dealings with West. Rebellion is crushed. Extremists relocate in Egypt. Thoughts of Jihad against the West and America become central to the movement.

1928. Muslim Brotherhood established in Egypt by Hassan El Banna .

Mother organization for today’s Egyptian Jihad Islami and Hamas.

Muslim Brotherhood is built on Wahhabi foundations [vi] .

1928. Amin Al-Husseini becomes prominent member of Muslim Brotherhood.

He sees the Wahhabi concept of Islamic Jihad as a key tool to rally pan-Islamic support to further his agenda of Pan-Islamic take-over. The Muslim Brotherhood now under Husseini’s influence, becomes the main vector of hatred against the West and the Jews: the Arab World, which includes Palestine, must be free of any non-Islamic faith. Therefore, Jews and Christians have no claim to any part of the Middle East or of the Arab World.

Jenin Massacre

In April 2002, after Palestinian terrorists caused more than a hundred Israeli deaths in the preceding month alone, Israel launched Operation Defensive Shield. A significant part of this military effort was aimed at the Jenin refugee camp, a known terrorist headquarter.

Within one day of the operation's start, Palestinian spokespeople were saturating the media with reports of a "massacre."

The BBC was especially aggressive in reporting on the massacre, with the numbers of alleged dead increasing exponentially. On the first day, 30 were reported to have been massacred. Within a week, the BBC was publishing an analysis comparing Jenin to "the massacres at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in Lebanon in 1982, in which at least 800 Palestinians died."

The BBC also gave heavy play to hysterical reports from UN observers, who contended that the situation was "horrific beyond belief". Likewise, the BBC gave lead coverage to the International Committee for the Red Cross (which at that time was still refusing to admit Israel to its ranks), representatives of which contended that Israel was hiding the war dead.

Amnesty International chimed in on the BBC's pages, with an Amnesty expert opining that, because there were bodies found under fallen buildings, there almost certainly was a massacre. And so the "Jenin Massacre" myth was born.

And it was a myth. From the start, the Israeli Army reported far lower casualty rates for the Palestinians. Although the Army initially thought that deaths might have been as high as 200 Jenin residents, within days it was scaling down that number to 70 Jenin residents.

The final toll, in fact, was in the 50s, with almost all of the dead being armed fighters. The IDF itself lost 33 soldiers, a higher death toll than it would normally have incurred had it not placed its soldiers at extra risk in order to minimize the risk of killing the civilians who found themselves in the midst of terrorist hideouts.

The truth -- that there was no massacre -- emerged very quickly. Within weeks of the battle in Jenin, Honest Reporting provided a comprehensive summary of the myth's propagation in the British media, and of the falsity of those same stories. The British media, however, while retreating from its "massacre" language, has never backed down from or apologized for its wildly inflated coverage.

Two years later, in an article about the UN's rebuilding of Jenin, replete with references to the threat Israel continues to pose to a town even the BBC acknowledges is a "Martyrs' Capital", a BBC report neutrally reported that "The battle of Jenin sparked international outcry" and that "Charges of war crimes committed by Israel were made, while Palestinian authorities made unsubstantiated claims of a wide-scale massacre," without ever mentioning its own role in emphasizing the rumors while downplaying any contrary reports. Islamo-Fascism

The term Islamofascism is a controversial neologism which draws an analogy between the ideological characteristics of specific Islamist movements from the turn of the twenty-first century on, and a broad range of European fascist movements of the early twentieth century, neofascist movements, or totalitarianism.

The term "Islamofascism" is included in the New Oxford American Dictionary, which defines it as "a controversial term equating some modern Islamic movements with the European fascist movements of the early twentieth century". The term is used in this manner by writers like Stephen Schwartz and Christopher Hitchens, to describe Islamist extremists, including terrorist groups such as al Qaeda. William Safire makes particular note of Hitchens as a "popularizer" of the word, though Hitchens declines credit for coining it.

The origins of the term are uncertain. William Safire writes that the "first use [he] can find" comes from Malise Ruthven in 1990, when Ruthven wrote in The Independent that "authoritarian government, not to say Islamo-fascism, is the rule rather than the exception from Morocco to Pakistan." Albert Scardino writes that the term "seems to have appeared first" in a Washington Times piece, in which scholar Khalid Duran used it "as a criticism of hyper-traditionalist clerics." According to the Times, this piece appeared in July 2001.

Who has not occasionally heard Arabs saying: "We are born in the country ... You came to us, we did not come to you. Is there anyone not familiar with the statement that "the Zionist entity banished a nation that was living on the land for thousands of years "?

At the center of this propaganda myth is the Palestinians standing presence in consecutive Arabic communities in Israel, compared to a bunch of Colonialist Zionists who came to Israel (Palestine) - in order to steal their land while it sat quietly at peace.

Global Jihad - Then & Now

Jihad is the obligation of each Muslim, within his abilities, to spread Islam in the world and it supposes to last up to the day that the last non Muslim human being recognizes Islam as the true faith. Generally the obligation of Jihad was understood as a peaceful method of setting a personal and social example of moral and caring behavior so others will join Islam because of its clear advantage for human desire for better, honest and non violent life. But during history, especially in the early days of Islam, Jihad by sword was an acceptable method, although never the only way to distribute and promote Islam. By its definition Jihad is, therefore, Global.

Initially, in the early days of Islam, Jihad was not against Jews or Christians, who believed in the same abstract God and were not forced to convert to Islam, but against the pagans who were forced to convert to Islam or face death.

What does the Arabic word jihad mean?

One answer came last week, when Saddam Hussein had his Islamic leaders appeal to Muslims worldwide to join his jihad to defeat the "wicked Americans" should they attack Iraq; then he himself threatened the United States with jihad.

As this suggests, jihad is "holy war." Or, more precisely: It means the legal, compulsory, communal effort to expand the territories ruled by Muslims at the expense of territories ruled by non-Muslims.

The purpose of jihad, in other words, is not directly to spread the Islamic faith but to extend sovereign Muslim power (faith, of course, often follows the flag). Jihad is thus unabashedly offensive in nature, with the eventual goal of achieving Muslim dominion over the entire globe.

Jihad did have two variant meanings through the centuries, one more radical, one less so. The first holds that Muslims who interpret their faith differently are infidels and therefore legitimate targets of jihad. (This is why Algerians, Egyptians and Afghans have found themselves, like Americans and Israelis, so often the victims of jihadist aggression.) The second meaning, associated with mystics, rejects the legal definition of jihad as armed conflict and tells Muslims to withdraw from the worldly concerns to achieve spiritual depth.

Jihad in the sense of territorial expansion has always been a central aspect of Muslim life. That's how Muslims came to rule much of the Arabian Peninsula by the time of the Prophet Muhammad's death in 632. It's how, a century later, Muslims had conquered a region from Afghanistan to Spain. Subsequently, jihad spurred and justified Muslim conquests of such territories as India, Sudan, Anatolia, and the Balkans.

Today, jihad is the world's foremost source of terrorism, inspiring a worldwide campaign of violence by self-proclaimed jihadist groups:

* The International Islamic Front for the Jihad Against Jews and Crusaders: Osama bin Laden's organization;
* Laskar Jihad: responsible for the murder of more than 10,000 Christians in Indonesia;
* Harakat ul-Jihad-i-Islami: a leading cause of violence in Kashmir;
* Palestinian Islamic Jihad: the most vicious anti-Israel terrorist group of them all;
* Egyptian Islamic Jihad: killed Anwar El-Sadat in 1981, many others since, and
* Yemeni Islamic Jihad: killed three American missionaries on Monday.

But jihad's most ghastly present reality is in Sudan, where until recently the ruling party bore the slogan "Jihad, Victory and Martyrdom." For two decades, under government auspices, jihadists there have physically attacked non-Muslims, looted their belongings and killed their males.

Jihadists then enslaved tens of thousands of females and children, forced them to convert to Islam, sent them on forced marches, beat them and set them to hard labor. The women and older girls also suffered ritual gang-rape, genital mutilation and a life of sexual servitude.

Sudan's state-sponsored jihad has caused about 2 million deaths and the displacement of another 4 million - making it the greatest humanitarian catastrophe of our era.

Despite jihad's record as a leading source of conflict for 14 centuries, causing untold human suffering, academic and Islamic apologists claim it permits only defensive fighting, or even that it is entirely non-violent. Three American professors of Islamic studies colorfully make the latter point, explaining jihad as:

* An "effort against evil in the self and every manifestation of evil in society" (Ibrahim Abu-Rabi, Hartford Seminary);
* "Resisting apartheid or working for women's rights" (Farid Eseck, Auburn Seminary), and
* "Being a better student, a better colleague, a better business partner. Above all, to control one's anger" (Bruce Lawrence, Duke University).

It would be wonderful were jihad to evolve into nothing more aggressive than controlling one's anger, but that will not happen simply by wishing away a gruesome reality. To the contrary, the pretense of a benign jihad obstructs serious efforts at self-criticism and reinterpretation.

The path away from terrorism, conquest and enslavement lies in Muslims forthrightly acknowledging jihad's historic role, followed by apologies to jihad's victims, developing an Islamic basis for nonviolent jihad and (the hardest part) actually ceasing to wage violent jihad.

Unfortunately, such a process of redemption is not now under way; violent jihad will probably continue until it is crushed by a superior military force (Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, please take note). Only when jihad is defeated will moderate Muslims finally find their voice and truly begin the hard work of modernizing Islam.

Rules of Joking in Islam

1) Some people joke too much and it becomes a habit for them. This is the opposite of the serious nature which is the characteristic of the believers.

2)Joking is a break, a rest from on going seriousness and striving; it is a little relaxation for the soul. Umar ibn Abd al-ëAzeez (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: 'Fear joking, for it is folly and generates grudges.

3) Imam al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: 'The kind of joking which is forbidden is that which is excessive and persistent, for it leads to too much laughter and hardening of the heart, it distracts from remembrance of Allah, and it often leads to hurt feelings, generates hatred and causes people to lose respect and dignity. But whoever is safe from such dangers, then that which the Messenger of Allah, used to do is permissible for him'.

4) Saíd ibn Abi Waqqaas said: 'Set a limit to your jokes, for going to extremes makes you lose respect and incites the foolish against you. The amount of joking should be like the amount of salt in one's food'.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Do not laugh too much, for laughing too much deadens the heart.

5) (Saheeh al-Jaamií, 7312) Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
'Whoever laughs too much or jokes too much loses respect, and whoever persists in doing something will be known for it'. So beware of joking, for it ìcauses a person to lose face after he was thought of as respectable, and it brings him humiliation after esteem.

6) The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.

7) In Fath al-Baari it says: 'What is meant by knowledge here has to do with the might of Allah and His vengeance upon those who disobey Him, and the terrors that occur at death, in the grave and on the Day of Resurrection'.

Muslim men and women have to be inclined to choose righteous and serious friends in their lives, who will help them to make good use of their time and strive for the sake of Allaah with seriousness and stead fastness,good and righteous people whose example they can follow.

8)Bilaal ibn Saíd said: 'I saw them [the Sahaabah] jokingly pretending to fight over some goods, and laughing with one another, but when night came they were like monks'.

So you have to follow the example of such people, who were knights by day and monks by night. May Allah keep us, you and our parents safe on the Day of the Greatest Terror,those to whom the call will go out on that great Day: Enter Paradise, no fear shall be on you, nor shall you grieve [al-Aíraaf 7:49 ñ interpretation of the meaning].
